Paso a paso

Marta.

English version.

Today I'm going to tell you about how I've taking to knitting. For those of you who are thinking about learning... I'd better warn you: it's addictive!

Last week I went to a workshop in a shop called Mummy Crafts where I learnt how to knit a round scarf with two needles. It was a great experience. I finished the scarf in a few hours and learnt the basic techniques of knitting. If you live in Madrid and like crafts I really recommend that you visit this shop. In my case, it's always dangerous to go to these types of shops as I would end up being skint.

In the workshop I knitted a brown scarf for me, but when I showed it to my boyfriend he liked it so much that I decided to give it to him and make another one for myself. So this week, I've made a mustard one for me, as I thought it would be a good color to brighten up winter clothes.

I would like to explain how I made it with a video tutorial, but I have no video camera unfortunately. Although I'm planning to post some video tutorials on the blog soon.

So, I'm going to try to explain in a few words how I made it. It's a tutorial for those of you who already know a bit about knitting.

DIY

Materials

150-200 gr. of wool.
Two needles (I used number 15, but the size of the needles depends on the wool that you use).
A needle to sew wool or a crochet to close the scarf.

Step by step

Cast on 20 stitches. This is going to be the width of the scarf, so if you want it wider you have to cast on more stitches.

Then we have to knit as many rows as we want to. I knitted until I ran out of wool.

To close the scarf in order to make it round we have to sew the two edges with a simple stitch using a bit of the same wool.

And that's it, round scarf finished.

Do you like knitting?

Ah! Almost forgot... next Tuesday we'll continue with the blogger interviews, On this other post you can see the last one. don't miss it!

Xx.

'Allo 'allo!

I've got a really easy and cheap tutorial for today! As Christmas time is almost here, and we spend a lot of money during these days (presents, dinners, parties...), I thought it would be good to post this DIY that I'm sure you'll love.

And also, its a good craft to make at this time, because.. Are you going to throw a party at your house and you need something cheap and nice to decorate? Then, keep reading!

MATERIALS:

  • Coloured tissue paper or crêpe paper.
  • Scissors.
  • Thread or cord.

STEP BY STEP:

  • We have to cut about 7 or 8 rectangles of paper of the same size. The size depends on how big you want the flower to be.
  • We fold all the papers together as you can see on the picture above, as if it was an "accordion". Then we have to knot the thread around the centre and we cut the ends in a rounded shape.
  • And lastly, we have to separate all the layers, one by one, to form the flower. And that's it!

I made these flowers to decorate the DIY Show stand.

And you, what would you use these flowers for?

Xx.

¿Qué pasó en el Diy Show? - What happened at the DIY Show?

¿Y vosotros, fuisteis al DIY Show? :)

Un beso.

Marta

(English version)

Today I'm going to tell you about my experience at the DIY Show.
As I already told you in this other post, I was selected by Red Facilisimo to participate with them in the fair. This fair is one of the most famous in Madrid in relation to the "Do It Yourself" trend. Due to the economic situation here in Spain, lots of young people are starting to do what our grannies used to do such as sewing, knitting, crochetting...

It's very noticeable how the interest in arts and crafts is rising on social networks. Lots of people have recently taken up new hobbies related to crafts which is why the DIY Show was so successful last weekend.

I was very lucky as I was there on Friday, helping to prepare the stand, and on Sunday as well, this time showing people what I make. Just as well that I had a quick look on Friday before going home... because on Sunday it was so crowded that I wasn't able to leave the stand at all!

For those of you who couldn't come, I have to tell you that the fair was really really good. Lots of stands with thousands of materials, fun and interesting workshops, and lots of beautiful handmade stuff.  You could find anything there: wool, zpaguetti, crochet, scrapbooking, beads, sewing, cooking, decoration... So many things to learn about!

In the Facilisimo stand there were three different bloggers every day. On Friday we had Veronica from Bulalaica, Chus from Manualizando, and Lucía from Momentos Vintage. On Saturday the three bloggers were Blanca from Blandie Cuky Style, Mara from Mil Nubes de Colores, and Rosa from Tela, Patrón, Tijeras.

And on Sunday I shared the stand with two fellow bloggers: Cristina from Mi Armario Coqueto and Blanca from Ideando a Mano. Cristina had some posters with inspiring sentences that could be used to decorate any little space at home, and Blanca showed us how to make flowers out of wire and nail varnish, which is very easy and the result is very nice.

And me, I did a workshop for kids about how to create macrame bracalets. You can find the tutorial here. It's a easy craft that you can make with little ones but which is also valid for adults.

And to sum up, I just have to say that we had a great time. It was such a good opportunity to meet the poeple from Red Facilísimo, and also to meet the bloggers that I told you about before. And I really loved giving the workshop that I had prepared. I also took lots of the things that I make, and everyone loved them!

You can see above some of the pictures that my friend Gloria took, she's very good at it! And also my friend Raquel was there, who's the designer of our new logo, which I hope to have on the blog soon so that you all can see it!

And so, did you go to the DIY Show? Or do you know any other fairs that you like in the area where you live?

Xx.

Auto-entrevista

Hola a todos!! (Scroll down for English version)

La primera entrevista he decidido hacérmela a mi.

Me gusta mucho viajar, conocer sitios nuevos, gente nueva, y culturas diferentes.

Marta.

Hi to all!!

Today I'm starting a new section in the blog: the interviews

The idea is that every first Tuesday of the month I'll publish an interview of another blogger. If you want to participate you just have to get in touch with me by sending me an email to: sewcreativa@gmail.com

I made the proposal of the interviews on Facebook and lots of people loved it. The objective of these interviews is going to be to get to know a bit more about who's behind the blog.

I thought that it would be good to interview myself first, as I thought that it would be good for you to know a little bit more about me. So let's start with it.

-Tell us a little bit more about yourself...

Right so... where do I start... Well, as you all know I'm Marta, author of this blog, Sew Creativa. I've got a degree in tourism and I'm a sign language interpreter. I speak English (on a dialy basis as my boyfriend is Scottish), French, a bit of Italian and Sign Language. I love languages. I'm from a little town near Madrid, Colmenar Viejo, but I currently live in Madrid. I love travelling, geting to know new places, meeting new people, new cultures... I've been pretty lucky so far and I've been able to travel a lot, I can't complain.

- How did Sew Creativa start?

When I was little I was really into making different crafts. And when I grew up I continued with my hobby. Any present that I had to get, I tried to give it a personal touch or personalize it, either the packaging or the present itself. I always had a creative idea that I wanted to carry out. I love accesories, decoration, sewing, knitting... and I'd tried a bit of everything, but just making things to myself or for other firends. So I thought that I could show what I had learnt through all those years. And all of a sudden, one day, without thinking about it too much, I said... Right now is the perfect moment to start a blog. And so I did.

- Is it true that starting something new is always hard, or was it easy for you to start a blog?

The truth is that at the beginning I started it just to try. I had no idea about blogs, I didn't even know if I would like spending hours sitting in front of the computer typing. It was a bit like an adventure. I've learnt a lot, thanks to all those great blogs that teach you how to create your own one. But I have to say that I still have a lot to learn. And the good thing is that I enjoy learning new stuff. It's not easy to have a blog, as it requires a lot of effort, time and hard work. I'm still a beginner, and I would like to have more time for it, although I haven't been able to yet.

- What do you like the most about having a blog?

There's various things. Everything I do, I do it with a lot of enthusiasm. And people tell me that they like what I do, so that's somthing very satisfying. I've also met really nice people thanks to the blog. And also the feedback of the readers is something that I love. Every time I get an email saying that I've got a new comment on my blog, I get really excited and quickly open it to see what it says. It's always nice to see that people read your blog, and like what they read. And also writing a blog is a way to disconnect, to change from what we're always doing, and to do what you really want to do.

- And what are the bad things of having a blog?

Well, in my case, as it's a blog about crafts, it needs a whole lot of time. I first have to make the craft itself, take pictures of every single step, and I have to plan when to do it because I need to have natural light for the pictures... Then I have to write the post (in my case it's double, as I do it in Spanish and English), put the pictures up and modify them if need be, check every single detail... and then post it, promote it on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Google +, Twitter, Pinterest...), answer to comments... So yes, it takes loads of time, that's the only bad thing I would say.

- Do you have any goals, any objectives that you want to reach sooner or later, or any projects in mind?

Pfff... loads. My mind never stops thinking about new stuff! I've got few things in mind that I would like to do.... One of them is to create an online shop, and I hope to get it done by next year. But I want to plan every single detail before doing it. Another thing that I would love to do is writing a crafts book, but that's something that I think it would be quite hard to do... Ah! And also I want to record video-tutorials, but I first need a video recorder!

- What piece of advice would you give to the readers that want to open a blog?

Don't think about it, just do it. As I said, you'll need to work hard. Patience and hard work are needed. And more hard work. But it's in your own hands if you want to make it work. If you really want to have a blog, just do it, dont hesitate.

So, I hope you liked my self-interview. And I'll be more than pleased to read all your comments. :)

Xx.

Marta.
